Mentoring
Having a mentor who understands and listens to you can be a very beneficial process. Mentoring is one of the roles of a PhD tutor, and is particularly necessary when faced with long pieces of work and little formal structure. I have been a PhD tutor to four students over many years, and mentoring has played a very important role in my tutoring approach. Mentoring involves helping students identify their goals and issues. It involves passing on good practice and experience. It also requires someone to listen impartially and help to talk through a number of courses of action. Being mentored over the course of a degree, master’s qualification or PhD can help you offload your worries to an independent third party, who can help set goals with you and offer advice.
